Cooper Journal: Oops! I ruined your life. :) →
I don’t mind friendly error messages myself, but there’s a fine line between friendly and insulting sometimes, especially when you’re trying to do something important. I can see both sides of this debate.
What do you think? Are these messages inappropriate, or do they represent attempts to humanize computer communication a little?

I agree with almost all of this, and I think if enough people keep saying it, companies will start doing it.
Gfail
When Gmail implemented its new design, my initial response was fairly positive; I liked the cleaner, simpler look (though it still has a long way to go in terms of aesthetics). My main quibble was that the icons seemed like a step backwards from the text labels. As icons go, they’re reasonably clear, but they still require a momentary pause to “translate” them, something that...

New Poll: UXers and Visual Design
Are you a UX professional? If so, I’m curious about how much visual design you do as part of your UX job, if any. This is for a presentation I’m working on about the role that visual design plays in UX design, and also for my personal curiosity. There will be more polls on this topic coming up in the next few weeks.
Thanks!
How much visual design do you do on an average project?

I could swear I’ve seen this done before, but I’m having trouble remembering where. Still, this is a particularly nice implementation.

Surprise and Delight
I recently renamed this tumblog to reflect my new plan for it: as a repository for examples of great user experience, on the Web or wherever. Specifically, I believe that we’ve reached a point where many (most?) consumer-facing sites and other digital spaces get basic user experience right, more or less. You can buy something online, find a hotel or compare airfares, check your bank balance,...

I love single-purpose sites like this one. Some of the quotes work better than others, but most are pretty great.

Facebook: Smart or Stupid?
The other day, when I went to Facebook, I was greeted with an overlay message telling me that everything—interests, political and religious views, hometown, bra size—in my profile was now going to become a page, in order to enhance my “connections” to those things, and presenting me with a long list of all of these putative pages. (One of my interests as listed in my...

Save the IA Summit! (if it needs saving)
Last year after the IA Summit, I came home feeling energized and inspired, but also somewhat troubled by all the angst that came out of the conference (much, though not all, of it related to JJG’s closing plenary). This year I came back even more energized and inspired. And also delighted and impressed that at least one person, the estimable Richard Dalton, took JJG’s challenge and...

Missed Opportunities
Edit: After writing this, I spent a few minutes with my Nook and realized that there is a Buy link on the color screen; in fact, it’s the first link there. I must have navigated back to the home screen somehow when I finished the sample referred to here. So I now point to Barnes & Noble as an example of a company that isn’t missing important opportunities. My basic message still...

Why I'm Still Calling Myself an Information...
At the time that he gave it, much of JJG’s IA Summit keynote really resonated with me. Much of it still does, in fact, and is bouncing around my head every day; he asked some important questions, like the ones about why no distinct schools of thought have emerged in IA, and whether there will ever be a controversial work of IA, and so on. But the bit that really grabbed me at the time,...

Four things I hope not to hear at another IA...
First: yes, I started this blog just to make this post, but I hope to use it at least occasionally to jot down thoughts about my work and our profession in a less long-winded fashion than this post. I blog elsewhere, but this post didn’t really fit with my (sporadically updated) personal blog, and I’d been meaning to start a Tumbleblog for a while anyway, so here it is.
A disclaimer:...
